Clinical decision support

Urine output calculator

Calculate urine output in mL/kg/hr for dogs and cats. Assess oliguria, normal output, and polyuria with clinical interpretation and monitoring guidance. Educational decision-support tool only.

Enter total urine volume collected over the specified time period. Use a urinary catheter with closed collection or weigh absorbent pads (1 g ≈ 1 mL).

Educational support only. Verify with clinical judgment.
Safety checks
  • This tool supports calculation and education only.
  • It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace clinical judgment.
  • Measurement accuracy depends on proper collection technique.
  • Single measurements are less informative than trends over time.
  • Always correlate with physical exam, lab work, and imaging.
Basis and limits
  • Formula: Urine output (mL/kg/hr) = total urine volume (mL) / (body weight (kg) × collection time (hr)).
  • Oliguria: < 0.5 mL/kg/hr suggests inadequate renal perfusion or intrinsic renal disease.
  • Normal: 1–2 mL/kg/hr is typical for dogs and cats.
  • Polyuria: > 2 mL/kg/hr may indicate solute diuresis, diabetes insipidus, or other causes.
  • Scope: this tool provides arithmetic support. It does not replace full diagnostic workup.
