Safety checks
  • This tool supports scoring and education only.
  • It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace neurologic examination.
  • MGCS is subjective; consistent evaluator training improves reliability.
  • Trends over time are more informative than single scores.
  • Always correlate with imaging, CSF analysis, and response to treatment.
Basis and limits
  • Scale: Modified Glasgow Coma Scale for small animals (3 categories, each scored 1–6; total 3–18).
  • Motor activity: assesses gait, posture, and spinal reflexes.
  • Brainstem reflexes: assesses pupillary light reflex (PLR), oculocephalic reflex, palpebral reflex, and corneal reflex.
  • Level of consciousness: assesses responsiveness to environment, visual, auditory, and noxious stimuli.
  • Severity: 15–18 mild, 9–14 moderate, 3–8 severe brain injury.
  • Scope: this tool provides a quick scoring reference. It does not replace full neurologic examination or advanced imaging.
