Clinical decision support
Modified Glasgow coma scale
Score motor activity, brainstem reflexes, and level of consciousness for dogs and cats. Review interpretation, severity grading, and suggested monitoring frequency. Educational decision-support tool only.
Safety checks
- This tool supports scoring and education only.
- It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace neurologic examination.
- MGCS is subjective; consistent evaluator training improves reliability.
- Trends over time are more informative than single scores.
- Always correlate with imaging, CSF analysis, and response to treatment.
Basis and limits
- Scale: Modified Glasgow Coma Scale for small animals (3 categories, each scored 1–6; total 3–18).
- Motor activity: assesses gait, posture, and spinal reflexes.
- Brainstem reflexes: assesses pupillary light reflex (PLR), oculocephalic reflex, palpebral reflex, and corneal reflex.
- Level of consciousness: assesses responsiveness to environment, visual, auditory, and noxious stimuli.
- Severity: 15–18 mild, 9–14 moderate, 3–8 severe brain injury.
- Scope: this tool provides a quick scoring reference. It does not replace full neurologic examination or advanced imaging.
