Corrected sodium calculator

Calculate corrected serum sodium for hyperglycemic dogs and cats. Accounts for dilutional hyponatremia caused by elevated glucose.

Educational support only. Verify with clinical judgment.
Safety checks
  • Corrected sodium is an estimate — not a substitute for repeat testing.
  • Severe hyperglycemia (>600 mg/dL) can cause significant pseudohyponatremia.
  • Always correlate with clinical signs and hydration status.
  • This tool supports calculation and education only.
  • It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace clinical references.
Basis and limits
  • Dog sodium reference: 140–152 mEq/L.
  • Cat sodium reference: 145–158 mEq/L.
  • Formula: Corrected Na = Measured Na + 0.016 × (Glucose − 100), with glucose in mg/dL.
  • Scope: Estimates true sodium in hyperglycemia. Does not diagnose.
Formula

Corrected Na (mg/dL glucose): Measured Na + 0.016 × (Glucose − 100)

Corrected Na (mmol/L glucose): Measured Na + 1.6 × (Glucose − 5.6) ÷ 100
