Clinical decision support
Body condition score calculator
Score body condition for dogs and cats using the 1–9 scale. Review species-specific descriptors, interpretation cues, and suggested clinical next steps. Educational decision-support tool only.
Safety checks
- This tool supports scoring and education only.
- It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace physical examination.
- BCS is subjective; inter-rater variability is common.
- Always pair BCS with body weight, muscle condition, and clinical history.
- Adjust clinical plans based on individual patient response and comorbidities.
Basis and limits
- Scale: 1–9 scale adapted from WSAVA nutritional assessment guidelines.
- Dog descriptors: 1–3 emaciated/underweight; 4–5 ideal; 6–7 overweight; 8–9 obese.
- Cat descriptors: 1–3 emaciated/underweight; 4–5 ideal; 6–7 overweight; 8–9 obese.
- Weight estimation: Each BCS point above or below ideal (~5) roughly corresponds to 10–15% of ideal body weight in dogs, and 5–10% in cats. This is an approximation.
- Scope: this tool provides a quick reference. It does not replace hands-on palpation training.
