Safety checks
  • This tool supports scoring and education only.
  • It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace clinical examination.
  • Pain assessment is subjective; consistent evaluator training improves reliability.
  • Trends over time are more informative than single scores.
  • Always correlate with physical exam, behavior, and response to analgesia.
Basis and limits
  • Scale: Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) 0–10 adapted for veterinary patients.
  • 0–3: Mild pain — monitor, consider non-pharmacologic interventions.
  • 4–6: Moderate pain — single or multimodal analgesia indicated.
  • 7–10: Severe pain — aggressive multimodal analgesia, reassess frequently.
  • Scope: this tool provides a quick scoring reference. It does not replace comprehensive pain assessment.
