Safety checks
- This tool supports scoring and education only.
- It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace clinical examination.
- Pain assessment is subjective; consistent evaluator training improves reliability.
- Trends over time are more informative than single scores.
- Always correlate with physical exam, behavior, and response to analgesia.
Basis and limits
- Scale: Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) 0–10 adapted for veterinary patients.
- 0–3: Mild pain — monitor, consider non-pharmacologic interventions.
- 4–6: Moderate pain — single or multimodal analgesia indicated.
- 7–10: Severe pain — aggressive multimodal analgesia, reassess frequently.
- Scope: this tool provides a quick scoring reference. It does not replace comprehensive pain assessment.
