Chocolate toxicity calculator

Estimate methylxanthine dose and toxicity level for dogs and cats.

Educational support only. Verify with clinical judgment.
Reference ranges & assumptions

Defaults are commonly cited references. Adjust to match your toxicology reference or institutional protocol.

Safety checks
  • This tool supports calculation and education only.
  • It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace current clinical references.
  • Verify patient-specific decisions with current toxicology references, hospital protocols, and veterinarian judgment.
  • Chocolate concentrations vary by brand and recipe. Use custom input when unsure.
  • Confirm weight and amount units before calculating.
Basis and limits
  • Calculation basis: total methylxanthines (mg) = amount (oz) × mg/oz. Dose (mg/kg) = total mg / body weight (kg).
  • Assumed concentrations: defaults are estimates and vary by brand. Adjust in the Assumptions panel to match the specific product.
  • Toxicity thresholds: defaults are mild ~20 mg/kg, moderate ~40 mg/kg, severe ~60 mg/kg, lethal ~100 mg/kg. Adjustable in assumptions.
  • Scope: this tool estimates exposure. It does not replace toxicology consultation or clinical judgment.
Formula audit trail

1. Convert amount to ounces if entered in grams (g ÷ 28.35).

2. Total methylxanthines (mg) = ounces × mg/oz.

3. Dose (mg/kg) = total mg / body weight (kg).

4. Toxicity level is categorized against the editable thresholds in the Assumptions panel.
