Clinical decision support
Chocolate toxicity calculator
Estimate methylxanthine dose and toxicity level for dogs and cats.
Reference ranges & assumptions
Defaults are commonly cited references. Adjust to match your toxicology reference or institutional protocol.
Safety checks
- This tool supports calculation and education only.
- It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace current clinical references.
- Verify patient-specific decisions with current toxicology references, hospital protocols, and veterinarian judgment.
- Chocolate concentrations vary by brand and recipe. Use custom input when unsure.
- Confirm weight and amount units before calculating.
Basis and limits
- Calculation basis: total methylxanthines (mg) = amount (oz) × mg/oz. Dose (mg/kg) = total mg / body weight (kg).
- Assumed concentrations: defaults are estimates and vary by brand. Adjust in the Assumptions panel to match the specific product.
- Toxicity thresholds: defaults are mild ~20 mg/kg, moderate ~40 mg/kg, severe ~60 mg/kg, lethal ~100 mg/kg. Adjustable in assumptions.
- Scope: this tool estimates exposure. It does not replace toxicology consultation or clinical judgment.
Formula audit trail
1. Convert amount to ounces if entered in grams (g ÷ 28.35).
2. Total methylxanthines (mg) = ounces × mg/oz.
3. Dose (mg/kg) = total mg / body weight (kg).
4. Toxicity level is categorized against the editable thresholds in the Assumptions panel.
