Basis and limits
- Calculation basis: body weight and a clinician-selected 50–150 mg/kg calcium-gluconate amount are converted into total mg and volume using the locked 10% calcium-gluconate concentration of 100 mg/mL.
- Scope: this tool checks selected-dose arithmetic only. It does not choose whether calcium is indicated, which product is appropriate, route, timing, dilution, monitoring, or treatment.
- Before use: verify that the vial is 10% calcium gluconate (not calcium chloride), that the input is calcium-gluconate mg/kg rather than elemental calcium, and that it matches the current protocol.
- Clinical use: treat the displayed volume as arithmetic support only, never as an automatic administration instruction.
Formula audit trail
1. Convert body weight to kg when weight is entered in lb.
2. Total calcium gluconate dose = body weight x clinician-selected mg/kg calcium gluconate amount.
3. Calculated volume = total dose divided by the locked 100 mg/mL 10% calcium-gluconate concentration.
4. Volume per kg = total volume divided by body weight in kg.
