Clinical utility
Dilution calculator
Solve C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ for a dilution using one shared concentration unit and mL volumes.
Formula reference
C₁V₁ = C₂V₂
Leave the selected calculated value blank and enter the other 3 values. C₁ and C₂ must use the same selected concentration unit; volumes are mL.
V₂ − V₁ = diluent volume to add.
Supports mg/mL, % w/v, mEq/mL, and IU/mL. It does not convert between units or support concentration-increasing preparations.
Safety checks
- This tool supports calculation and education only.
- It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace current clinical references.
- Verify all calculations before preparation and administration.
- Use the same selected concentration unit for C₁ and C₂; volumes are mL.
- Confirm product, diluent, solubility, compatibility, stability, sterility, and labeling before preparation.
Basis and limits
- Formula: C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ (conservation of mass in dilution).
- Units: one selected concentration unit for C₁/C₂ (mg/mL, % w/v, mEq/mL, or IU/mL); volumes are mL. This tool does not convert units.
- Diluent volume: V₂ − V₁ gives the volume of diluent to add to the stock solution.
- Scope: dilution arithmetic only. Final concentration cannot exceed stock concentration and final volume cannot be less than stock volume. Does not account for volume contraction, chemical incompatibility, osmolarity, or a clinical preparation plan.
