Safety checks
- Arithmetic support only.
- This tool does not recommend whether dextrose support is indicated.
- Review final concentration, route, and delivery context carefully before using a hypertonic dextrose result.
Basis and limits
- Calculation basis: bolus mode converts g/kg into total grams and stock volume; bag mode converts a target final percent into stock volume to add and optional grams per hour.
- Scope: this tool supports dextrose arithmetic. It does not choose route, dilution strategy, indication, or a treatment protocol.
- Before use: verify the stock concentration, final delivery setup, line choice, and current case plan against protocol and product labeling.
- Clinical use: bolus-dilution math and bag-concentration math remain separate workflows and should be matched to the actual setup being prepared.

Worked example and practice
Worked example
A 10 kg dog needs a 0.25 g/kg dextrose bolus from a 50% stock solution.
Total dose = 10 kg x 0.25 g/kg = 2.5 g
Stock volume = 2.5 / (50 / 100) = 5 mL
The arithmetic answer is 5 mL of 50% dextrose before any separate decision about dilution, route, or line selection.
Try this case
Estimate the answer before revealing it: how much 50% dextrose stock is needed to make a 1 L bag into 2.5% dextrose?
Reveal worked answer
Stock to add = 1000 x 2.5 / 50 = 50 mL.
Total dextrose in the bag = 1000 x 2.5 / 100 = 25 g.
If you want the final bag concentration to stay exact, remove 50 mL of base fluid before adding the stock.
