Clinical decision support
Blood pressure & MAP calculator
Calculate mean arterial pressure (MAP) and assess perfusion status from systolic and diastolic blood pressure in dogs and cats. Educational decision-support tool only.
Safety checks
- This tool supports calculation and education only.
- It does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace clinical judgment.
- BP varies with patient position, anxiety, and measurement technique.
- Trends over time are more informative than single measurements.
- Always correlate with physical exam and perfusion assessment.
Basis and limits
- Formula: MAP ≈ diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) / 3.
- Adequate perfusion: MAP ≥ 65 mmHg is generally considered minimum for tissue perfusion.
- Hypotension: systolic < 90 mmHg or MAP < 65 mmHg suggests inadequate perfusion.
- Hypertension: systolic > 160 mmHg (dogs) or > 170 mmHg (cats) warrants investigation.
- Scope: this tool provides arithmetic support. It does not replace full cardiovascular assessment.
